Event Description

As some of us are still not able to get out for some plein air, due to crowded parks, busy streets etc, it was suggested that we try another virtual paint out. This time it is Venice. There are lots of images on-line and I am sure google maps can be used. If anyone joins in it is best to post your painting in a blog. The blogs are the last box to the right of the screen, next to notes and tips. For some reason I dont see this on my phone so I find it easier to use a pc for blogs.

Hi folks. Sorry i missed you for the coffee.  Let me know where U are next time and ill join you.  I was pooching around the dark alleyways and back streets that day hoping to fine some of  Sargent’s painting spots.  Had a lovely time but didn't recognise anything.   Will have to do with copying his Venetian Woman.   Are ye getting any painting in amid all the excitement?

Sean that happened to my sister the first time we went to Barcelona, they cut her handbag off at the strap. It was terrifying but since then I have learned to have inside pockets, no worries about fashion Im afraid but safe. We loved that holiday, the travel dept was great value, but the early airport starts are a thing of the past for us. When I look at some of the photos and see those hundreds of people crossing those ancient bridges I feel guilty at the mass tourism that I was part of, its good to be a virtual traveller and thanks for that map

That Travel Dept,   Lake Garda package,  trip to Venice, that Norah mentions, setting off at 6.30 in the morning,  was also my experience of the city.  In Venice I had my main wallet and passport stowed in a very private and safe place,  with just a float  of less than 10 euros in a side pocket for coffees.   And as I walked along I discovered a  guy had his  finger and thumb on my float wallet and was trying to quietly extract it  from my pocked.   But I manoeuvred away, making

sure not to provoke him, and everything was OK.  So I was quite pleased

with that result in Venice.

I crashed my boat - all those handsome gonderiers lol, that google maps is great, thanks Sean. Caroline and Kyrle you paint a great picture with words here, we will definately have to go sometime. I know a lot of the Wexford gang have been a few times, did you go Kevin ? I went to Lake Garda with the Travel dept once but we only had a few hours in Venice, it was magical seeing it for the first time - even Paddy wanted to stay longer

Isn't it a hoot.. We can't go out to paint safely in the Boyne Valley and you and I strolled down the canals on a very very remote island in a lagoon in Venice, and frequent the same restaurant as Kings Queens, actors Singers and Artists such as Picasso and Chagall.. Ha! There is an up side to covid after all!

Kyrle, I already walked it twice yesterday, the very same route (Google Earth) as well, once wasn't enough for me!  Then I did every inch of that gorgeous Island towards my beautiful Cathedral.  Miss sitting outside the Restaurant, and can still taste the coffee.  The Devils Bridge nearly killed me-trying to stop my two children from pretending to fall in (and afraid that they might actually do that!).  I keep going back towards my beautiful Basilica, and the lovely smell of damp and mosaics inside!   Also love the restaurant, as there were so many different angles to choose from around there.  Isn't it a magical Island. Have started looking through photos, not found all of them yet! Myself and Norah have often talked about arranging a holiday to Venice for the group, but with Google Earth we can do it safely!  We might be able to do that someday, when things calm down. Both the canal and paths are very narrow on Torcello.  It would be magical to be there now Kyrle, as I think still no tourists! (blast we are tourists too)

Caroline, Norah, I'm just walking down the canal bank to the Locanda Cipriani Restaurant on Torcello (via Google Earth) right now , Its still as beautiful as I remember. I think I can smell the coffee..maybe I had a drop too much wine last night...hold on! I think I can you waving on the Devils Bridge Caroline!!..I'm gonna stick my easel down near the Basilica where you going yourself?. Sean be careful of the bow wave the canal is very narrow on Torcello.

Caroline, we have often chatted about going there as a group, I would love to go there someday but at the same time not wanting to add to the throngs of tourists. It will be great to try using photos and I will dig out a few from our 4 hours there, there is no time limit - I am still working on a Howth painting I started for the last one. Thank you Sean for the great idea to get a boat from Howth to Venice.

Absolutely love Venice, any Island, but I have one absolutely favourite!  I agree with you Kyrle, love that restaurant, on my favourite Island in the whole of Venice. Its so quiet, and the very old Cathedral is absolutely stunning.  I think it is the quietest Island of all of Venice.  I am now going to look up photos I took of that Island, and outside the same restaurant.  Brings back beautiful memories.

Kevin, you will be spoilt for choice. Casanova covered a LOT of Venice (mean the streets)! Caroline.
