A Lesson learnt.

Today I was working in my studio, when I looked outside and guess what,  the sun was shining and screaming come out and paint, I did just this. I went home gathered my equipment and off I went, bare in mind that I had not used this gear in almost a year. A quick look inside my easel and all seemed to be ok. I got to my destination set up and started to paint It wasn't long…

Neil Carrigan an appreciation.

The North West Painters Lost one of its founding members earlier this week. Niel Carrigan  His day to day job was as a school teacher but at the weekends he was an avid out door painter, who enjoyed the challenge's of painting the light, around and on the landscape, no matter what the weather and believe you me, we painted in some weather conditions, from wind swept to bright sunny days. On our last trip out the weather was good we went down to the Isle of Doagh in Donegal, where we were…

Winter Activity

Over the winter I have been recycling some of older easels and redesigning two larger ones, (i suppose you could say three as the largest one is actually two parallel for even larger works ) both are counter-balanced, to make it easier to work on…

Place for Commerce

Is it just me or is there a certin amount of comercial intrests starting to move in to the site . Are we begining to loose the primary intent to gather people together for the purpous of painting. Should the self intrests of the more profesionl members be catered for elsewhere.

response to the Canidan Group of Seven posted by Tony Robinson

I was fortunite to visit the original gallery about seven years ago, and it was a very well laid out show, including the contemporaries. Each artist had their own space, laid out next to each other. From what i can remember it was quite a walk, but well worth it. They are brilliant examples of plein air painting at its best. I hope that the show in the Dulwich Picture Gallry is as  good. I would encourage you if you are in Torento go mand see the original exhibition space.

groups ?

While being a member of a group is great for company and not being the only one in the vilage, it has its drawbacks, manily its lack of spontaniety. Groups havce to be organised and planed as far as possible.

Mary got a water colour  finished,… Read on...

Paint out stories.

I have found that people cant help looking over the artists shoulder, some do ask first but others well you know. Some of the strangest places where i have encountered curious people,In my early days painting out I was rather shy, so I would go to remot locations, normaly into the hills around Donegal, I found a spot with a good view over Donegal bay, sat down, took out the required equiptment, there was a clear view all around, abslutily not a person in sight, aprox 20 minuets at the point you… Read on...

In the Quiet of the Country

This was painted from a series of photographs and sketches taken on one of my days in and around co Donegal. The Background hills are simplyfied so they do not distract from the forground. This painting containes both abstract (hills) and represintinal (forground),
