Comment by Norah Blount on December 4, 2013 at 11:42: Sean, I would imagine that the physics at work in a spectrophotometer (Newton and all that stuff) is probably the same with light being reflected from the source to different mirrors . I think I have an interesting article somewhere that I will dig out and see if it sheds any light on the subject

I was intrigued that the magicians Penn and Teller were involved in the investigation but I found the set up with mirrors etc. so complex that I didn't understand it. On reflection, I think they should also have investigated the grid system, illustrated below, in tandem with the lens system, and discover which was the most practical. Personally, I'd put my money on the grid system.
