Sean, I would imagine that the physics at work in a spectrophotometer (Newton and all that stuff) is probably the same with light being reflected from the source to different mirrors .  I think I have an interesting article somewhere that I will dig out and see if it sheds any light on the subject

Thanks Norah for your kind comments.    I was intrigued that the magicians Penn and Teller were involved in the investigation but I found the set up with mirrors etc. so complex that I didn't understand it.  On  reflection, I think they   should  also have investigated the grid system, illustrated below, in tandem with the lens system,  and discover which was  the most practical.  Personally, I'd  put my money on the grid system.

What a brilliant article Sean, I will read it again later but I love the description of the man who did all the research -

"Curious, careful, soft-spoken, and comfortably schlumpy, he comes across more as a neighborhood professor you might see at Home Depot than as a guy who owns his own jet"
