Our destination this Saturday is Old Mellifornt Abbey and/or nearby Monasterboice. Old Mellifont Abbey was founded in 1142 and was the first Cistercian abbey in Ireland. The abbey sits in a peaceful valley set in the rolling fields of south County Louth. Mellifont was the model on which all Cistercian abbeys in Ireland was based. It is especially famous for its octagonal Lavabo.
Hugh O'Neill finally submitted to Queen Elizabeth here in 1603 marking the Flight of the Earls after the Battle of |Kinsale.
The site does not officially open until May so we should be able to work away in relative freedom. Free car park.
Monasterboice is a product of early Christian Ireland, founded in fifth century. It continues to this day as a burial ground but is famous for its 10th century High Crosses and round tower especially M uiredach's Cross
And if you don’t ‘do’ buildings there’s plenty of honest-to-god countryside.
We meet for coffee or breakfast in The Monasterboice Inn.
Travelling northwards on M1 take Exit 10.
Go right around roundabout and watch for brown National Monument signs for Monasterboice (not Mellifont yet). It is very well signposted.
Follow the signs towards Monasterboice. You will find yourself travelling north on the old Drogheda –Dundalk road.
Continue until you see Monasterboice Inn on your right.
Well done. All the best,

Weather in the Boyne Valley this morning:- No snow, no rain but very windy and, of course, cold. I'm having a big bowl of porridge and will be at the M Inn at least for the coffee just in case.....
Check events page for clarification of directions.
Very wise Caroline and to be recommended. Keep an eye on the site in case paintout is cancelled.
Sallly, I would love to attend, but will wait until Saturday morning to see what road conditions are like.
N.B. Old Mellifont Abbey is the main focus for this weeks’s Boyne Valley paintout. Monasterboice Inn is merely the very cosy hostelry where we are meeting pre-paintout. Ooops…. my little weakness showed in putting it first.
