The passion in Irish landscape painting 10 Replies

What is is that drives the Irish artist to paint? Is it the amazing scenery of Ireland? Or is it the unusual light that I notice in so many plein air paintings done there? My family is 3rd generation…Read on...

Just back from a weekend workshop at Rockport Art Assoc - Great instructor - David Curtis.  We worked inside copying techniques of the Cape Ann school masters.  I haven't been painting outside all Winter-too lazy.  Still around 20 degrees farenht here this morning.  No parking meters on Sat but when we returned on Sunday morning, all the street meters were in place.  Wow, that was fast.

Just rambling!

Thanks Lori for this group. I wish I could be there this year, but Haywood and I will be on an Alaskan Cruise at the end of July. I want to return sometime though. We had such a good time at AITO and I can't wait to go back and spend more time with the friendliest people I have encountered! Made some wonderful friends ... and will get to see two of them at the Plein Air Convention in Las Vegas. Yeah!

Fun!  Peanutbutter pie, fried chicken .....   I won't be able to be there this year.  My husband, Doug, and I are taking our truck camper and driving out to Wyoming to visist our daughter, and see some of the USA on the way out and back.  I will certainly be thinking about everyone in Ireland, sounds like this year will be amazing!

Yes Elaine.  I'll be there! we are not sure just yet if Mark will get to come with me or not. If he does, he wants to bring a little southern (U.S.) hospitality and cooking to our friends there. Hoping it works out.

Tony, speaking for myself, and I think for all the other Yanks who have been to AITO, and Ireland in general, you, and your countrymen and women welcomed us with open arms.  Having Plein Eire extends that welcome throughout the year.  Thank you!

Lori, are you going to AITO this year?

A big welcome to all our American friends in 'Yanks'. It is great that you have your own spot on Plein Eire. Here in Ireland we follow closely how things are done in the USA and we have had great help and support in our efforts from artists like Lori, David Diaz, Scott Boyle and Don Maier of Plein Air Artists along with several others who have made the trip to Ireland and given advice and encouragement.

If anyone is considering coming across the pond to take part in Art in the Open plein air festival later this year, you should be aware that the festival is running a terrific competition in conjunction with the Plein Air Artists site. It is a simple, fun competition with a great prize of 7 nights for 2 people in a 4-star hotel and admission to the painting festival. The prize is open to anyone (not only Americans) and it will be won by someone; last year it was the lovely Marsha Hamby Savage who travelled with her husband, Haywood.

There will be more on this site about that festival soon but I just wanted to make sure you know of the competition as the deadline is 10th March. But then, if you aren't in it, you can't win it.

Best of luck!
