Ireland's Art in the Open is Europe's largest plein air event with up to 200 artists and 7 days of paint-outs, each to a different location a short ride from our festival base in Wexford.
Locations include rolling Irish landscape, rivers and beaches, fishing harbours, market towns, castles and gardens. There are demonstrations and hands-on workshops with top artists in various media. Evenings include lectures and social activities - plenty opportunity to meet other artists from Ireland, Europe and USA. Maybe even a pub with Guinness and music. There is also an exhibition with awards and a quick-draw event.
The event is open (ie. not juried) and booking is available online from mid-February.( http://www.artintheopen.org )

@ Tony,I agree with you, totally on this one, I notice however that there are some self contained apartments in Wexford for very good prices, but I would imagine that they would fill up very quickly, so early booking would be recommended.
The barter system looks like it could be really interesting for the future. Sadly, the organisation is finding it hard to get locals to offer artists a bed for the week. Of course, this is easier to achieve in places where the local plein air festival is limited to 40 or so selected professionals. In these circumstances, the guest artist will gift a small painting to the host family. Here, where we have 200 artists, both amateurs and professionals, it is not so easy. It is never going to be possible to host-house everyone but finding available accommodation at reasonable rates, in high season, especially for single occcupancy is a problem and prevents even more people from attending Art in the Open.
I would love to attend this, but sadly it looks like it would be 2015 before I can make it. Noticed someone's suggestion re offering certain skills in return for accomodation, sounds like a good idea. I can in particular, offer the following basic marbeling classes and a self catering accommodation swap in the south of Ireland.

I will attend AITO 2014 and look forward to it enormously. Last year was simply fantastic.
Looking forward to this event: painting, making friends and visiting beautiful Ireland!
Hope to make it.
Hey David, me too. See you there!
Looking forward already--ready to visit some favorite places and new ones, and meet up and chat with some great friends
