Painted at Johnstown Castle with the SEPA Group yesterday - I usually struggle to find attractive painting subject matter at this location, mainly I think because everything is a bit too ornamental - I prefer things to be a more natural. So, influenced by recent tree paintings by my German friend, Maike Josepuit, I decided to look up and found this large oak (at least I think that's what it is) talking to me! More of a "tree portrait" than a landscape then and ultimately it just became a fun exercise in pushing paint around, although I did keep true to the subject to some extent. Mostly done on location, but finished in the studio this morning - the cold got to me yesterday after the sun disappeared.
It's oil on 11" x 14" MDF board.

Thanks Sally. That's what caught my eye in the first place. It was difficult though, because the sky behind the tree clouded over shortly after I started - then the sun disappeared altogether! The other challenge was to get the balance right between warm/cool and tonal contrast. I had to lean more towards the latter than I normally would (in the sense that my darkest areas are near black).
You did a great job, Michael. The bare tree against the blue sky is very attractive.
Thanks Deirdre.
Wonderful .
Thanks John. A bit of a challenge for me!
Lovely study in light and depth Michael.
