‘En plein air’
Saturday 9 July 2011, 11.30am.
The term, ‘En plein air’, generally refers to the act of painting outdoors. To coincide with the Fine Lines exhibition of drawing currently taking place in Istabraq Hall, Limerick City Gallery of Art is scheduling En plein air, an outdoor drawing event taking place in People’s Park, Pery Square on Saturday 9 July.
En plein air will kick off at 11.30am with a short tour of the park led by Fiona Kiely of Limerick Civic Trust. This will be followed by focused drawing workshops led by artists Paraic Leahy and Patrick Fitzpatrick. The workshops are intended to draw attention to the varied features and vegetation that make People’s Park such a special facility in the city of Limerick. Participants, guided by the workshop leaders, will have the opportunity to respond to the many elements that make up ‘park-life’ through the medium of drawing.
It is hoped that the workshops will attract a broad range of participants from novices, who would like to develop their interest in drawing, to more experienced amateurs interested in the possibilities of drawing outdoors. Practising artists are also welcome to join the event. Some materials will be provided but participants are advised to bring a sketch pad and pencils. Fold-up picnic chairs or stools could be useful. Participants should also bring umbrellas as a ‘precautionary measure’.
Early booking is advised as places are limited:
