Ballytrent Today!!

Brrrr Jane and I braved it down at Bally trent Beach today!!! Boy was it cold!! I got myself into a lovely little spot just at the entrance to the beach. The dune had built up over the course of the winter and there was quite a bit of shelter there, and a lovely little run off of water from the land, however by the time I was finished my feet were ice!!

Still it was lovely to get out and slap on some paint!!…

Winter stuff !!!

Been drawn to the beach this weather like a bee loves nectar. The big skies around Carne and south Wexford are just a pleasure to try to capture, although for me its often a case of going too far and not knowing when to "step away from the painting"!!!

I must say its been great getting out most days and giving it a go, even though its often FREEEZING!!

The brightness for the last week is very uplifting I believe!

It definitely draws me out to paint when its cold and…

Brush Mileage!!!

This time of year its hard to try to stick the cold and wind. However I have been doing my best to get out and paint as I need " Brush Mileage" I am like the michelin man with all the layers on in an effort to keep the Baltic wind out of my bones.

One thing though, the cold makes me paint quicker and stay away from detail, as I know 1hour and 15-30 minutes will be the max I can stick the cold, before I have to head in and get rid of the numb fingers!!!

YES I do have fingerless…

Sad news.

It was very sad to hear of the passing of a good friend of this site, Don Maier yesterday. I had the pleasure of meeting and painting with Don and Suzie during AITO 2012. The "painting coat" came in handy for Don at Tintern Abbey when he was painting in a shady cool spot. When my car broke down in Wexford on the Sunday of AITO I met Suzie and Don along the town, we sat down for coffee, a chat and cake

Don was so droll and with such a dry wit, it took my mind off the car disaster!!

Tacumshane 2015

What's a lovely way to start a new year?

Getting out to paint with fellow plein air painters on a gorgeous, bright, cloudless day in early January.

It was a fantastic start to the first paintout of 2015, dry crisp weather, blue skies and a lovely venue to meet up at Jerry Meyler's Millhouse Bar and Restaurant. Nine members of our group turned out to enjoy a lovely day of painting, craic, mince pies, mulled wine and the hospitality of Dee and John Moriarity at their lovely home…

Alttymen Paintings

These four pieces were completed at the Brandenburg Berlin Painting event at Alttymen earlier this year. The paintings bring back lovely memories of painting with friends and artists both old and new.

Three were done en plein air and the fourth was painted upstairs looking at the landing window on the third floor outside the kitchen.

All are watercolour and various sizes. …

Paintings from ZION

The three paintings that I posted here today were from a trip to Zion which Jane Meyler and I made after the Plein Air Convention in 2012. It was difficult to keep a flow to the work as the heat literally sucked the moisture out of the paper. Luckily I had a spray bottle to use this did help and I would advise anyone painting watercolour in warm temperatures to have a spray bottle to hand it really helps. Zion and some of the parts of Utah I have painted in,are absolutely amazing, if you…

Day at the Heritage park.

This was one of three paintings completed in the Heritage park Ferrycarrig Wexford, a few weeks ago.

I really enjoyed the day there, with other members of SEPA.

My aim was to try to capture the play of shadows as they changed and lengthened very quickly through the afternoon.

This was the first painting begun around 1pm and then the other two were…

Mystery Paint -out.

Well yesterday some SEPA members met in White's Hotel, our mission turned out to be quite challenging, we were randomly designated a Wexford business premises to paint. All said establishments are taking part in "Wexford in Bloom" a competition for the best Garden (beer) or otherwise or best window boxes etc.

I was very lucky as i got Granville House B&B in Clonard to paint, the front garden was absolutely fantastic and the back was out of this world with doves and old stone little…

Thelma and me are on our way,

We’re off for a day’s sketching, painting and CRAIC

“I hope I get something down today” she doesn’t reply she’s nothing to say,

But I’m not miffed she houlds her whisht, that’s her way, so along we sway.

“Clonegal today we’re meeting the crowd”..

“Will there be two, three, ten twenty or more”

  I wonder out loud.

Thelma stays silent not knowing the score.

“The…
