Plein Eire Dublin Paint-Outs

A 'Paint-Out' can be arranged by anyone. Even an impromptu session can be posted here if the weather is promising and you have an afternoon or a morning to spare. We try to meet regularly. Just decide on a time and a suitable venue and post a notice on the group page and 'Events'.

Time and location to be posted in advance both on "Plein Eire Dublin" and "Events" pages on this Plein Eire site.

RSVP on 'Events' for notice to be sent to you in the event of any change in plans or check this Plein Eire Dublin Group page on the morning of a paint-out .

  1. Nominate a time and location with reasonable painting prospects.
  2. Identify a local cafe or hostelry for artists to meet in before and after.
  3. Indicate if there is parking available nearby, and if its free or metered.
  4. Post the suggestion to 'Events'and copy and paste the link to the Comment Wall below on this page.

Members may also propose paint-outs at other times as suits them and ask for other members who may be available to join them.

Hi Folks, sorry about the late notice:

The next regular First-Saturday-Of-The Month “Paint Out” will be on Sat Nov 6th to the Twelfth Lock, on the Royal Canal at Castleknock (map attached); meet at the Twelfth Lock Hotel bar/foyer at 11.30 for 12 noon start. Hopefully better weather than last time and some autumnal colours on water...

Hi John, sounds great, looking forward to seeing you there. I will be there after 1.

Nice interesting location John. We sketched there when the Theatre was being built, I was wondering then about the red scaffolding poles, now I know they were part of the design. Grand Canal Basin can be a draughty place, best to come prepared. Hope to make it soon after 1oc. Looking forward to the outing.

Hi all,
Next Paint Out due Sat Oct 2nd: further to suggestions I've reconoitered Grand Canal Basin, again somewhere central for greater Dubliners: it has a variety of scenery with modernist buildings, boats, canal locks, some urban delapidation; depending on weather there could be some nice light on the water and glass buildings. Not somewhere I naturally gravitate to (I get more excited by boats lying on mud at low tide!) but then these events can stretch one! Meet at "Fresh" grocery (and coffee shop with plenty of chairs) overlooking Basin (see map attached) at 11.30 for 12.00 start. Look forward to seeing you there.
Best
JOHN O'F

I agree with you Norah, and I notice his oils and watercolours have a sort of crossover technique! No harm watching others providing it gets you started!

Yes Mary - have a few of his DVD's should spend more time painting and less time watching others paint, his watercolours are my favourite

I have to agree with you Nora. I love when the heavy summer foliage has got out of the way, and it certainly makes for great photography. Pity the days get so short though.! David Curtis is amazing, I love both his watercolours and his oils!

Having just got a book by UK artist David Curtis I read that he prefers to paint plein air Nov to April in England as he says it is easier to see good landscapes etc with leaf canopy gone so no excuses !

Mightn't be the best time of year to sign up .. but theres a nice freshness about paintings done outside. I'm still at basics with oils ... but could give it a shot some saturday.

Think it would be a good idea to post next paint out under the events section, I will not be able to make it next month, Howth or Malahide are good locations with plenty of parking etc
