Scully's work fascinates me also, Kevin and Rothko  -  this new piece is really very good - the colours and shapes work wonderfully.  These sorts of works make the viewer think - congrats Liz

That studio piece is really good, ( sublime) The last time I visited the Hugh Lane The area that the Scullys are displayed in was closed, because of staff cutbacks! I complained ( in a very nice way) and got a private viewing!, his work needs time but given time it gives you something new every time you return to it, and you always want to return, so that is the success of the work

Hi Liz, the castle was nowhere to be seen. It was at the upper lake. I was thinking about what I had done in the morning and how unsatisfying it was. Using the same palette I decided to have a go at what I have been doing in the studio over part of the winter. I have been fascinated by Sean Scully's work for a long time and I have decided to try and see what it's all about. This, below, was one of the first successful pieces.

Anyway, long story short, my starting point was figurative but then it takes on a life of its own and shapes or representation don't matter anymore. And so what if passersby thought I was a bit loony? I took away and added and in the end I had a plein air piece. I haven't touched it before posting out of respect for the ethos of this site but I feel it can be improved on and I will more than likely work on it again.

Really like this, Kevin - Is it a reduction of Johnstown Castle?   - the colours are absolutely great - I would love to know the thinking behind your painting - Liz

Thanks Paddy, Louise, Sally and Sean.

Definite Sean Scully influence, Paddy. Not as successful as the four studio pieces in this vein. This was my first outside and I hardly looked at my surroundings as I had done a small "plein air" piece from the same spot in the morning. Totally liberating and very constraining at the same time.
