11''x16''oil on card.
We met on Saturday; Sally, Gerry and myself. After a quick bite and a wee chat at Seapoint golf club, us three intrepid painters headed out into the cold January day; out to that environment so influenced by the Irish Sea. I ventured towards the beach, and soon realised that the steady wind would hamper any effort that I might make towards engaging with the seascape; even though the amazing possibilities that the waves and beech and rocks and distant headlands held, captivated my imagination. So, I headed back to the road and after a brief conversation with Sally, who was by this time painting (wisely) from inside her car - I found myself in a soggy field and quickly set up my stuff, taking shelter behind a hedgerow. I surveyed the landscape and contemplated Clogherhead and the hills on the landward side behind it in the distance. There was a housing development of red brick dormer dwellings on the outskirts of Termonfeckin in plain view and I briefly thought that I might take a stab at painting the scene. But I knew that the conditions and my Christmas induced rusty-ness prohibited any attempt at such bravado. So instead I painted what you see. Something that feels familiar to me. Something that may not look like anything much except paint thrown onto a support and sploshed around a bit for sport. But who cares; as I have the memory of that day - the struggle to get up, to make the journey and to get out there despite the conditions. I have the 2 acquaintances with whom I made the effort. I have the knowledge of a previously unknown place and lastly but not least I have a palette and some brushes to clean for another day

Lovin this painting and the memories it provokes
As you siad yourself, Pattrick there is a whole other world in that hedge. Well done.
Very poetic and well captured patrick.
Thank you Norah and Tony for your comments. I think this one was really more about just the experience
of going out and painting en-plein air and the challenges that that poses. It is difficult sometimes so focus
on a specific scene and to try and render it well when one is surrounded by so much natural perfection. Tony I will look up Malachy Costello - thanks for the pointer.
your painting and your description of the day are really beautiful Patrick - its what makes sats so special when you go out painting, and thanks for sharing it so eloquently
An ambitious and courageous painting, Patrick. Do you know the paintings of Malachy Costello? This reminds me of them (and that is good!).
