Some statments in a plein air piece (particulary strong brush marks) although may be inacurate, serve the energy of the work better if let stand rather than trying to correct them later. Perfection belongs only to Allah!

Yes, it was those red cloth barriers in the leaden grey light that intrigued me to sit down and paint this. It is the other end of St Kieran's Street. There were lots of bright colours which could have been garish except they were sort of harmonised by that smoky blueish light. I've been doing a few red boats and things lately. Its not a colour we get to use in any quantity, raw, as a rule. Not really a conscious decision but... ? Instead of brightening the sky up in the corner of this scene, I emphasised the outline of the roof and edges of Kyteler's hanging sign. I was also attracted by the little lamps and lanterns hanging there while it was still daylight. I put them in early so as to relate everything to them in value, leaving them bright but still yellow. they've probably been knocked back a bit in the hurly burly of finishing this scene and could maybe do with cleaning up again but I think I'll leave it.
For the figures, I tried to remember the maxim of painting patches of colour and value and don't paint 'things'. But its easier said than done, eh?

Hi Tony. Looks like St Kieran's Street from the opposite direction to where Karen and I were painting earlier. It's a great crop and the figures are really well done. Must have been overcast by then, but I think the painting would look even better if you lightened the value and warmed the hue of the pavement and the background sky a little to differentiate them some more from the buildings. I feel qualified to do critque on street scenes now that I've done three or four!
