I won't be participating this year as I'm doing an artists residency during all of August.

Tony asked me to sum up the document so here it is.

The plein air painting event in Subiaco is an annual event. It takes place in and around the hill top village, in the region of Lazio which is technically part of Rome. It has an amazing history and was home to Emperors and Popes. The remains of paper mills and book binding centers remain from the 15th century. Palaces of the Medici and the original cavern of Saint Benedict are part of the town. The cavern was extended into a beautiful troglodytes warren of churches and priests accommodations.

It's worth arriving a few days in advance to explore. A bus goes directly from Rome with a baggage compartment. The journey is 2 hours from the city and the bus is frequent.

Artists who register, especially foreign artists who travel to the village, are given a hero's welcome if they stay for the full extent of the event, from the 17th - 19th of August.
You have to register because room and board are free during the event in shared accommodation if you take part in the complete event. Sometimes it's in the monastery and sometimes in a local B&B. Numbers are limited but there can be as many as 50 artists there as guests.

The final day is the big competition and this is the day the village swells with artists coming from all over Italy to compete for the prize money. Many are really talented, professional artists. There were hundreds there the first year I participated and the ambiance is jolly and dynamic.

Events begin on the 17th, "">with a sketchcrawl within the village. Locations are indicated on a map. You pick the ones you like the most. You get 4 hours and submit the works when complete. Monitors check that artists are working. School teachers and children wander among the artists and debate among themselves whom they think has done the best painting. There is a symbolic award. There is music and a light meal in a local cafe. Mostly pasta.

"">Saturday 18 August from 10am - 2pm
You will be asked to capture the beauty of the mountain, from specified spots. There is music and entertainment for visitors to the village who come to see the artists painting. A big meal in a beautiful restaurant in the evening for the artists.

"">Sunday 19th August
Painting in the town or monastery. Times not specified. Your canvas or paper will be stamped before you begin.

"">At 6pm the event for the artists is wound up with a competition and awards for paintings. It's takes place in the Saint Benedictine monastery Ora et Labora. "> There is a speech, a meal for artists, the childrens awards and then the adult artists awards. Finally everyone is allowed to see the winning works displayed all together in an exhibition.
The prizes are cash and will change from year to year, depending on the sponsors.  You'll be expected to surrender your art for the duration of the exhibition if you win an award. The exhibition goes from the 20th - 27th of August.

Enjoy the company of the artists. It's a beautiful and mysterious place. Some locals speak english but not many.
