The website, www.artintheopen.org went live only last week and already several have registered for Europe's biggest plein air event, forming the nucleus of an exciting festival. Extra names will be added below over the coming weeks as new people register.
There are fascinating hands-on workshops, both all-day studio-based ones and half-day plein air ones, each limited to 12 places. You do not have to register as a festival participant to book a place on a workshop. But don't miss out on them.
Here is the current Art in the Open line-up of plein air painters:
Grahame Booth, (N.Ireland)
Kate Bedell, (Ireland)
Marc Dalessio, (Italy)

Comment by Plein Eire Administrator on November 22, 2011 at 11:41 to Midge and Mary Ann (and anyone else), thanks. Art in the Open I know will be delighted to have you take part. Accommodation links will be included on the new website. But here is a good link to find a variety of accommodations depending on your preferences.
At the beginning of the new year AITO will be seeking volunteers for home hosts - locals who would like to have an artist stay with them for a week or a few days to take part in Art in the Open - Perhaps in exchange for a small painting or very modest rent. This will be the first time the festival will have undertaken this and as yet the response of both artists and hosts is unknown but we know it works well in Holland and other places. News of that later...
As for accessing the painting sites, the festival volunteers do a great job arranging car pooling and lifts. All the sites will be within less than one hour's drive from Wexford Town which is the hub of most events.
For Wexford from USA, fly to Dublin and I'd recommend Wexford Bus which takes about 2 and a half hours. Or there's the option to hire a car at the airport. Driving is on the left in Ireland and the journey by car is about 1 and 3/4 hours.
From UK or France, either travel to Dublin, as above, or take a ferry to Rosslare from Cherbourg, Roscoff, Pembroke or Fishguard. Wexford is just 12 miles north of Rosslare and easily reached from the ferry port by bus, train or taxi.
I'm really looking forward to attending Art in the Open 2012. I'll be travelling from the States for this. Any recommendations on places to stay? That would be in a good location to the painting sites? Perhaps centrally located? Since I've never been to Wexford or the festival, I'm not sure of the lay of the land or how far apart the painting sites are.
Thanks for any feedback.
Comment by Midge Ace on November 21, 2011 at 23:50 Will definitely try an make this event .. anyone know of any good reasonably priced places to stay?
Comment by Niamh Slack on November 20, 2011 at 22:01 Ha ha! Alas, I don't know that I will make the festival as I'm planning a trip away next summer. It's very disappointing but if I do miss it I will be really looking forward to returning in 2013..
Comment by Plein Eire Administrator on November 20, 2011 at 0:30 Thanks, Niamh.
Anyway, by now you must be on bedsit walls all over Ireland, in between the Rock Gods and the Movie Stars. Time to hand over the crown and sash, I'm sorry to say. Gone but not forgotten...like.
But you are coming on down to regain the title?
Comment by David Diaz on November 20, 2011 at 0:02 Aah-- I can already feel the breezes of the harbor in the morning--nice presentation
Comment by Niamh Slack on November 19, 2011 at 23:42 Well folks, it looks like I'm handing the torch over to Michael! I have to say it sure was fun while it lasted! Niamh (like, ex-poster girl).
Yes of course I approve Tony, I am very flattered!
