Good man, Kevin! Funny thing is that I have yet to see you produce anything that does't satisfy his premise! Happy New Year!

He seems to me like a man on a mission. He reminds me of those people who quote the bible to prove the existence of God. Accept his premise and you have to agree with his assertions. Could be Michael that the title puts people off commenting in case one thinks they are denying that truth. And it is the truth, but not the whole truth.

The idea of beauty is subjective but I do have to agree with some of his asertions but this program do's not alow for the arist who has questions, an individval, who has his own thoughts and an experance of life which is diffrent. Caravidigo was a suspected muderer but he painted some beautiful masterpices, not reflecting his inner termoil. At the end of the day only those who can aford to influence the arts get to say what is beauty. The rest of the time it is as Tony said it is Kitsch. forgive the spelling.

I wonder why people are reluctant to comment on this, despite all the views. Personally, I found myself agreeing with some of it. But he is one arrogant so-and-so! Bottom line for me is that art has to connect with the viewer at some higher level. Hard to define what that is, but we all know it when we experience it.

I wouldn't be too keen on Bernini, but he certainly was a genius of making marble become something close to flesh, but he's St. Theresa dosent seem to have a body! way to much crumpled up garments looks like a pile of washing with a head and foot sticking out of it! Simon Schama " The Power Of Art" did a very good piece on him, he was an auld devil by all accounts!

anyway back to Roger, I feel with painting and sculpture he could have looked at artists work such as Alberto Giacometti, Francis Bacon, Jenny  Saville, Frank Auerbach, Anthony Caro all artists that I believe have made really beautiful work but not everyone with agree, then I suppose he's not going to make a programme to suit me in particular!

Just watched it and have to agree. Its an interesting debate - maybe the debate - but not much advanced after being Scruton-ised in this film. Can't agree with his sweeping views on architecture for a start. And am I the only person who finds Bernini's ecstatic St. Theresa, with its gold rays and black marble plinth, kitsch?

Mmmm! "Define beauty" Roger seems more interested in what he perceives to be good taste or bad taste!

he does make some  points that I would agree with, but not many!
