Martry Mill paintout Boyne Valley 23/08/2014

I think we are going to have a special treat this week.  As part of National Heritage Week Martry Mill is opening its doors to the interested public.  It is a water mill and will be working on Saturday.   There will be free tours.  Tea and Coffee will be served. The mill has been operating since the Cromwellian Plantation.  And of course there is plenty of  water – a weir on the River Blackwater and a mill-race.  The area is very attractively maintained and planted with trees and shrubs.  I spoke with James Tallon, the Miller, and he says we will be very welcome to come and paint.

 Martry was the subject of a Hands documentary on RTE some time ago.

 The nearest restaurant does not open until 12 so lets meet at the mill, have our coffee there (bring a few titbits if you feel the need) and we can retire to the local restaurant, Martry Restaurant, later.

Directions:  Martry is on the R147 between Navan and Kells.  You may either take the Navan/Kells Road R147 via Blanchardstown etc. or the M3 (tolled).

If you take the M3 exit at Exit 9 towards Navan North.  When you reach a roundabout with a grey stone statue of a man with a large block(?) on his shoulder (maybe he’s a miller) take the first exit onto R147 to Kells.  Martry Restaurant is about 5 minutes away on the lefthand side and the mill is a few minutes further on on the right.
