Last January we visited Castlebellingham. It rained. Last week we were to visit Castlebellingham and ....it rained. Lets try again? Forecast is good.
Castlebellingham is a quiet little village between Drogheda and Dundalk, not far from Annagassan (a favourite venue). It won a silver medal in the Tidy Towns in 2012.
There has been a brewery in the village since 1770. The brewery was the main supplier of drink to the Boer War troops. Unfortunately, it no longer operates.
Unfortunately it is the wedding season and the castle grounds are not available this time. BUT
Beside the castle is an enclave of Widow’s Almhouses, 4 or 5 very pretty cottages built at the beginning of 20thC. Local artist, Carolyn Hoey, has captured a couple of them expertly in the attached photo
As usual we meet at 11 a.m. for coffee/breakfast, paint for a few hours and reassemble to review the day. Venue is Foley's Tea Rooms, a long thatched building at the north end of the village. To get to Castlebellingham from M1, travelling north, exit at junction 15 and continue to Castlebellingham. Turn right and Foleys is on your right
See you there.
