Event Description

So see you there.

Last time we met at Old Mellifont was in the depths of winter.  Next Saturday is the first day of Heritage Week.   Hugh O'Neill finally submitted to Queen Elizabeth here in 1603 marking the Flight of the Earls after the Battle of Kinsale and this Saturday there will be the added value of a lecture by OPW on The Great O’Neill  ( 1616-2016)  at 3 pm for anyone interested   Lecture is Free.

Old Mellifont Abbey was founded in 1142 and was the first Cistercian abbey in Ireland. The abbey sits in a peaceful valley set in the rolling fields of south County Louth.

It was the model on which all Cistercian  abbeys in Ireland was based. It is especially famous for its octagonal Lavabo.

Plenty of rolling countryside all around.

There may or may not be an admission charge.  That is still to be investigated.  No charge at 3pm for lecture.  Car park Free

We will meet at 11 a.m. in the Monasterboice Inn which is easily accessed  via Junction 10 (North Bound) or Junction 11 (South Bound) off the M1 Motorway. It is located a short distance off the M1 exits on the Old Drogheda Road – R132, in between the towns of Drogheda and Dunleer.
