Sheila 2020

As it was her birthday last week, thought I would tackle another effort at drawing my God daughter Sheila. Reasonable happy with the result in pen and ink.

Sail on the Norfolk Broads

Small w/c 7ins x 6ins from a photo sent to me by my friend Linda in East Anglia. Used only three colours altogether, Payne's Grey, Raw Umber and Olive Green. Hopefully will get to visit the area at some stage in the future as it looks so beautiful.

Park House Gatelodge

Out walking last week I passed this well-known landmark and did a quick pencil sketch from which I completed this painting yesterday. It's on Saunders Waterford 300lb rough paper and measures 7.5ins x 11.5 ins.

Venice Virtual Paint-out 3

A little Venetian back water, my final one for this challenge, although I could go on painting Venice forever. Have no idea of the name of the canal/street, but just couldn't resist photographing the washing line.

Venice Virtual Paint-out 2

Whilst in Venice a couple of years ago, I was fascinated by the various shapes of some of the windows. In a small street to the left of the entrance to La Fenice opera house, I came across this balcony over a shop which I thought  would make a good subject. Thanks to Norah's challenge I have finally gotten around to completing it. …

Venice Virtual Paint-out 1

Spent the last few days looking through my photos of Venice from our wonderful time there a couple of years ago. So much to choose from, so I hope you'll forgive me Norah if I end up doing more than one. Here's one to start, from a photo taken from the ferry as we arrived before rounding the building on the extreme right to enter the Canal Grande. More later.…

The Window Cleaner - Sheila Spring Cleaning

Paid a long overdue visit to my beloved Goddaughter Sheila the other morning and discovered her doing a spot of lockdown Spring cleaning. Needless to say she was happy to abort and have a chat and a coffee whilst maintaining our social distancing. Her in the garden, me on the wall. Lovely.…

Howth Challenge - Bailey Lighthouse

Well, I suppose someone has to post first so it may as well be me.  This is the subject I chose for Sean's Howth Challenge, the Bailey Lighthouse on Howth Head. My usual Saunders Waterford rough 11ins.x7.5ins.

Really enjoyed doing it particularly as I have never been there. It was nice to try something new. Thank you for the challenge Sean, maybe we'll do more before the end of this dreadful time. Won't make Noel's Zoom meeting tomorrow, but best regards to you all and keep those…

Wexford Panorama Commission

Watercolour on SW rough 200lb. 30x11ins. Was commissioned earlier this year to do this for a local businessman. It's one of the biggest paintings I've ever tackled, certainly one of the widest.  It took me two days and have to say I was very pleased with the result, and extra delighted when the recipient was happy too.…

Beethoven Portrait

As this is the year that celebrates the 250th anniversary of the birth of arguably the greatest composer that ever lived, Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), I thought I would try doing a portrait of him as I am a fan of classical music. For this I decided to return to my original working media of pen and ink. It took a while but am quite satisfied with the result.

Portraits and life drawing not my usual forte, but have to say I enjoyed doing this. …

Covid-19 Studio Works 3

Covid-19 Studio Works 2

'All Moored Up' at Wexford Quays. Another studio effort on Saunders Waterford rough 10x7.

Spent best part of the afternoon on this one from a photo. Three of Wexford's fleet of mussel-dredgers, featuring 'Ede Cunze', 'Cecilia' and 'Noordster', moored alongside at Common Quay.…

Covid-19 Studio Works

Well, as we are all doing our best to self isolate at the current time, it is nice to relieve some of the trying hours by indulging in some painting. Because of the 'lockdown' restrictions it is a great excuse to catch up on some work in the studio, spare room or on the kitchen table. Staying safe now is our main priority, and staying indoors is our best way of helping those health care workers on the front-line to cope with their daunting and dangerous work. Here are two I did recently from…

'The Schoolgoers'

Bringing my two little nephews Bobby and Jamie to school the other morning, couldn't resist this photo which I thought would make a nice painting.  Happy with the result.

2019 Lion's Club Art Exhibition Entry

Well, it's that time of the year for the annual Lion's Club Art exhibition at Wexford Arts Centre.  Was honoured last year when my entry won a merit award so felt obliged to put one in again for this year. The result - 'Friary Stained Glass Windows' - took eight days to complete and is a watercolour pen and wash on an 18x14 watercolour board. Exhibition starts tomorrow 25th and runs for a month.…

Mary Street, Commission

Now that Autumn has passed and we enter Winter, haven't been outside much doing many paintings.  However I was lucky enough to be given a couple of commissions lately and the one posted here is my favourite of the pair.  It is of my favourite building in Wexford - the Franciscan Friary, which I have painted many times from various angles, but this is the iconic view from the bottom of Mary Street: and I believe is on its way to someone for Christmas.  I was very happy with the result as it…
