Have a great time this year!  Wish I could be there, but exciting news here, our younger daughter is getting married at the end of July!

  • Tony Robinson

Well you can't miss that. Not even for AITO.

Have a good year and thanks for the good wishes. Same to you and I am sure we'll meet up to paint again.

  • Elaine Hurst

Absolutely!  I will keep up with how AITO 2012 goes.

I think the idea is they must be able to hang each painting easily and securely, so framing is encouraged but if you work in oil or acrylic, then stretched canvas strung for hanging will be accepted.

For pastels or watercolours, framing is a must. There are local framers who will have  a selection of ready-mades and will put together simple mats and frames during the festival week, while some artists bring their own frames to fit canvases or panels they intend to use. The festival brochure has a little more detail.

Hi all, I'll keep putting it out there, can anyone help me in finding some accommodation for a solo painter for Art in the open. Looking to billet, hostel or share accommodation. Happy to pay anyone who will ahve me :)

I really want to attend this event and currently in Europe and comming from Australia it might be my only chance.

    Kindly Leon

  • Kevin Freeney

Leon, have you looked at the accommodation links under Visitor's Information on our website http://www. artintheopen.org ?

  • Lynn Mehta

I can't seem to register on the AITO website - I get an error message when I hit the "booking" link that says its broken or moved.  I'm planning on going to the event, hopefully I can register soon.  It sounds like a lot of good painting fun.

  • Kevin Freeney

    Hi Lynn,

I have tested the booking link on different browsers just now and it's working fine. Hopefully your broblem was just a temporary hiccough and you have been able to access it since.

Congratulations to Lori Putnam, one of this year's AITO workshop tutors, who has recently won first place as a signature artist at Plein Air Artists of Colorado's 16th Annual National Juried Exhibition for her painting, 'Nestled Among the Ferns'.

Lori also received the Juror’s Choice Award in the 1st Annual Juried Exhibition of Women Painters of the Southeast (WPSE) at Corse Gallery in Jacksonville Florida.  Juror Barbara Flowers stated, “The design is strong and conveys overall simplicity, yet provides complex shapes to continue drawing the viewer in. There is sophisticated color harmony, appropriate use of values and understanding of color perspective. The surface quality is outstanding, in use of large vs. small strokes, board/narrow, long and short, thick and thin…. Finally, the artist knew when to lay her brush down. She said want she wanted to say and stopped! This demonstrates much restraint!

Lori is giving 2 workshops at Art in the Open and along with several others, they are selling out quickly. If you haven't already done so, book your place now as there are 12 places at each and that is all.

Kennedy's is a fine art shop. But to get there will necessitate going into the Dublin City centre when there is a direct bus to Wexford from the airport. There is a good art shop in Wexford (Spectrum Art & Framing) which has Daler-Rowney and Winton student oils and Winsor & Newton and Michael Harding both in Artists' ranges. I have to declare an interest in Spectum. But if you want to send a list of favourite colours from any of those ranges, I can have them put by for you, along with turp etc.

However, I like to poke around art shops sometimes and if you feel like exploring Dublin and have time to spare, Kennedy's on Harcourt Street will have all you require.

Although you could be unfortunate, its not strictly against airline regulations to fly with oils,  just turp, alkyds and some mediums which contain them.

  • Esther Heffernan

Hello, I have been away from the painting for the last while. I'm in a full time course at landscape and design. I miss ye all. I will not be taking part in the art in the open this year. I will miss all the fun. Cheers.

  • Plein Eire Administrator

That's a shame, Esther. We'll miss you. Still, good for you - taking on a new course. Hope it is going well for you. We say this every year but this one will, of course, be the best ever, lasting a full week and an exciting exhibition at the end of it.

Perhaps you can manage one day over the bank holiday weekend?

I suppose at least someone else might get a chance to sell a painting...! Keep laughing x.

     3 Adjudicators confirmed:

The adjudicators for Art in the Open 2012  awards are:

Joe Dunne  RHA , Principal, RHA School. ( http://www.joedunne.net/pages/intro.htm )

Art in the Open is delighted to have three such distinguished practising artists for the difficult task of selecting participants' work for this year's festival awards.
While the work of these artists differs widely in style and approach, all three are very familiar with the demands and possibilities of working en plein air. The festival committee hopes that the value of the awards is reflected in the calibre of adjudicator as much as or more than the cash amount awarded and the committee is very grateful to the adjudicators for their contribution to the success of the event and to the regard in which the awards are held.
  • Sally Downey

I've heard that the winning paintings from AITO may be seen somewhere on the site.  But where?  Dying to see them.

  • Lynda Moore

Just finished reading Pete McCarthy's book "McCarthy's Bar to help me get acquainted with the Irish life. Any other suggestions?
  • Kevin Freeney

Lynda, here's a few paragraphs explaining Ireland that I found on a friend's page recently:-

So this is for the benifit of all my friends who are confused or alarmed by the recent images being broadcast around the world, given that we are now 15 years into the peace process..

The capital of Ireland is Dublin . It has a population of a million people, all of whom will be shopping in Newry this afternoon. They travel to Newry because it is in the North, which is not part of Ireland, but still pay in Euros.

Under the Irish constitution, the North used to be in Ireland , but a successful 30-year campaign of violence for Irish unity ensured that it is now definitely in the UK. Had the campaign lasted any longer the North might now be in France.

Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland . It has a population of half a million, half of whom own houses in Donegal. Donegal is in the north but not in the North. It is in the South. No, not the south, the South.

There are two parliaments in Ireland . The Dublin parliament is called the Dáil, (pronounced "Doyle"), an Irish word meaning a place where banks receive taxpayers' money. The one in Belfast is called Stormont, an Anglo-Saxon word meaning 'placebo', or deliberately ineffective drug.

Their respective jurisdictions are defined by the border, an imaginary line on the map to show fuel launderers where to dump their chemical waste and bi-products. Protestants are in favour of the border, which generates millions of pounds in smuggling for Catholics, who are totally opposed to it. Travel between the two states is complicated because Ireland is the only country in the world with two M1 motorways. The one in the North goes west to avoid the south and the one in the South goes north to avoid the price of drink!

We have two types of democracy in Ireland . Dublin democracy works by holding a referendum and then allowing the government to judge the result. If the government thinks the result is wrong, the referendum is held again. Twice in recent years the government decided the people's choice was wrong and ordered a new referendum. Belfast democracy works differently. It has a parliament with no opposition, so the government is always right. This system generates envy in many world capitals, especially Dublin .

Ireland has three economies - northern, southern and black. Only the black economy is in the black. The other two are in the red.

All versions of the IRA claim to be the real IRA but only one of them is the Real IRA. The North's biggest industry is the production of IRAs. Consequently, we now have the Provisional, Continuity and Real IRA. The Real IRA is by far the most popular among young graffiti writers simply because it is the easiest to spell.

I trust this clarifies things and has answered many previously unanswered questions for you

  • Tony Robinson

No, Auburn Terrace is available - but there will be less rooms than in previous years so it would be advisable to book in good time.

  • Sally Downey

A useful discussion has propped up over  on The Yanks Group Page, and thought it would be of interest here, to any participants traveling to AIO from abroad. So it's been posted as a discussion on this group page also. If anyone has any further thoughts please add to it, thanks.....

This group page is essentially a talking-shop for folks taking part in (or thinking about) Art in the Open.

You can ask questions, get opinions and make suggestions here. But do please remember membership of this group page does not constitute registration for the event. You must do that on the festival website.

  • Valerie Syms Martin

I think I must have been about the first person registered.  The festival is brilliant - and really well organised.

    Can't wait!!!
