Suggestions to when & where Dublin Plien Eire should meet most welcome. I am available most days. If participants were generally spread around Dublin I thought we should alternate venues between three regions, Dublin North, South & West, to be fair to everybody. I am most familiar with north county coastal region, living in Sutton.
  • Mary O' Carroll

John I am in South of city, and near the dart! Sutton no problem!
We are used to getting around with the sketchers!
  • Sally Downey

I'd love to join a Plein air group anywhere in the northern Pale.
  • John Brennan

John, would be very pleased that you are setting up a Dublin Group. i look forward to being involved. Week-ends are best for me. Well done!
  • john o'flynn

    Hi all,
To jump start Plein Eire Dublin, (and in the absence of suggestions!) I and one other member have decided that the inaugural Paint Out will be on Sat, Sept 4 at 12noon. Where?-suggestions please! If none offered one will be imposed, by late Sun 22 Aug, (as I am away the following week!). I think somewhere on the western fringes may be best, as those from north and south Dublin are equidistant; somewhere where joe public isnt likely to be looking over artists' shoulders, and somewhere with a variety of aspects to paint (water, architecture, countryside...?) Perhaps the format should be: meet up, introduce ourselves, disperse, meet up for a drink, bite to eat after three hours....?
Looking forward to meeting you all,
    JOHN O FLYNN

I will be somewhere along the Liffey that day John and was going to bring my paints - it is Liffey Descent day (canoe race), which starts at Straffan Weir and finishes at Islandbridge. I will do my best to join you all - phoenix park would be handy for parking and Farmleigh has gardens and buildings, toilets and coffee shop - just a suggestion
  • Sally Downey

That sounds like a great idea. There is a very nice coffee shop/restaurant beside the walled garden at Ashtown Castle. The garden's not bad either - blooming lovely actually.
  • Mary O' Carroll

I agree, Phoenix park has some great locations.
I am very disappointed I will be missing the first meet up, but I booked 3 workshops for Saturdays in September some time ago. Enjoy the day, I look forward to hearing all about it!
  • john o'flynn

    Hi
I think Phoenix Park/Farmleigh is great idea - Shall we say Farmeligh Car Park at 12 noon?. Disperse from there and meet up at Boathouse Coffee Shop at 3? I'll be there from 11.45 with easel up to mark presence.

  • Tom Scott

Farmleigh sounds like a good site for the first outing, at the moment I should be free to be there.
  • Norah Blount

Thats great and will be there too
  • Sally Downey

I look forward to being there in the 4th.
  • Genia deSouza

The 4th sounds brilliant and all going well I'll be there too! Genia
  • James Moore

Hi John I think I met you in the botanical gardens once as that watercolour of the glasshouses looks familiar - I was one of the Dublin Sketchers. Anyway it was a great buzz down in Wexford and will make it down there from time to time but now that there is going to be a Dublin plein eire group aswell I'd love to join it.
See you all on the fourth.
  • Mary O' Carroll

Hi John, change of plans, I am now going to be there on Sat. 4th. Looking forward to it.
  • john o'flynn

    Hi all,
Lets hope the great weather we're having this week continues into Saturday for our outing to Farmleigh. In the meantime, if you can, get out there to catch this burst of summer sunshine on your canvas or watercolour pad! - JOF
  • deirdre moriarty

I am looking forward to our first paint out, see you there.
  • Norah Blount

Hope to make it there earlier than 12 as will have to leave about 2pm
  • john o'flynn

    Hi all,
Hope to see you at Farmleigh tomorrow for Plein Eire Dublin's inaugural Paint Out. Hope you enjoyed week's sunshine because, as forcast, Saturday sees a change to cloudy wet weather. Hopefully the rain may have passed by 12noon. I'll bring my sketching (ie golf) umbrella and we can all huddle underneath it! I have a spare artist's umbrella I can loan somebody if they wish to use it. Come prepared! - Best, JOHN/087 2709097
  • James Moore

    See ye there folks.
  • Phil Hofler

    Hi All,
Sorry I can't make it to Farmleigh tomorrow for the inaugural paintout. Next time.....
  • Sally Downey

Thanks for a great day today, John. Looking forward to the next.
  • Mary O' Carroll

Thanks John for out first day out! The grounds of Farmleigh are magnificent. Today I learnt not to water colour when the air is damp! I will have to choose an alternative medium in future. There was some great work produced there today!
  • Genia deSouza

Thank you John for a wonderful day despite the weather, which wasn't that bad really! Beautiful setting and so much to choose from! Looking forward to next one!
  • deirdre moriarty

hanks John for a very successful first day! I think that the venue was inspiring and the location excellent. I am looking forward to October!
  • Norah Blount

Thanks John for starting this group, good to meet you and sorry I couldn't stay - looking forward to next one
  • john o'flynn

    Hi all,
Thank you all for turning out to Plein Air Dublin's Inaugural Paint Out at Farmleigh, last Sat 4th Sept; we had a very good turnout, and weather had cleared by the time we started. We decided, initially at least, to Paint Out the first Sat of the month: so next Outing is Sat, Oct 2nd: suggestions for venue please (some want to return to Farmleigh, another suggestion was Ringsend/South Bull Wall; I myself think we should not overlap with the Dublin Sketchers, who choose busy city centre arenas; to me "plein air" is more pastoral(!) and out of town; the canals were another suggestion (I have wanted to go to the 12th Lock in Castleknock for a while, but I dont know if it would support 12, and more, different painting spots; (a nearby cafe/hostelry is also important!)).
I attach my effort for the day!
    Best
    JOHN O FLYNN

  • James Moore

Great job on the glass house it's an excellent picture, even more impressive given the grimness of the day that was in it, well done John and thanks for setting up the Dublin Plein Eire group great call.
  • James Moore

Hi folks what about somewhere like Dalkey Quarry for next paint out, not sure what the coffee shop situation is like but it's a pretty dramatic location for plein eire.
  • Paul D'Arcy

New to this - would like to get more info - anyone help ?
  • john o'flynn

    Message to Paul D'Arcy: Plein Eire Dublin is a new group for outdoor painters in the Dublin area; we plan to meet up for a Paint Out the first Sat of the month;
James, Dunno much about Dalkey Quarry - anybody else second that location for Oct 2nd?
    John O Flynn
  • Norah Blount

Think it would be a good idea to post next paint out under the events section, I will not be able to make it next month, Howth or Malahide are good locations with plenty of parking etc
  • Myles Farrell

Mightn't be the best time of year to sign up .. but theres a nice freshness about paintings done outside. I'm still at basics with oils ... but could give it a shot some saturday.
  • Norah Blount

Having just got a book by UK artist David Curtis I read that he prefers to paint plein air Nov to April in England as he says it is easier to see good landscapes etc with leaf canopy gone so no excuses !
  • Mary O' Carroll

I have to agree with you Nora. I love when the heavy summer foliage has got out of the way, and it certainly makes for great photography. Pity the days get so short though.! David Curtis is amazing, I love both his watercolours and his oils!
  • Norah Blount

Yes Mary - have a few of his DVD's should spend more time painting and less time watching others paint, his watercolours are my favourite
  • Mary O' Carroll

I agree with you Norah, and I notice his oils and watercolours have a sort of crossover technique! No harm watching others providing it gets you started!
  • john o'flynn

    Hi all,
Next Paint Out due Sat Oct 2nd: further to suggestions I've reconoitered Grand Canal Basin, again somewhere central for greater Dubliners: it has a variety of scenery with modernist buildings, boats, canal locks, some urban delapidation; depending on weather there could be some nice light on the water and glass buildings. Not somewhere I naturally gravitate to (I get more excited by boats lying on mud at low tide!) but then these events can stretch one! Meet at "Fresh" grocery (and coffee shop with plenty of chairs) overlooking Basin (see map attached) at 11.30 for 12.00 start. Look forward to seeing you there.
    Best

  • Mary O' Carroll

Nice interesting location John. We sketched there when the Theatre was being built, I was wondering then about the red scaffolding poles, now I know they were part of the design. Grand Canal Basin can be a draughty place, best to come prepared. Hope to make it soon after 1oc. Looking forward to the outing.
  • deirdre moriarty

Hi John, sounds great, looking forward to seeing you there. I will be there after 1.
  • john o'flynn

Hopefully better weather than last time and some autumnal colours on water...
  • Mary O' Carroll

Hope to be there on Sat. John. BTW. the 37 bus goes to the Station, if anyone is interested.
Hope to see you at the Art Fair, Janette, possibly Friday.Wishing you good luck!

See you there John, I .hope the weather is dry. Deirdre
  • john o'flynn

Hi all, We had six participants at this month's regular (first-saturday-of-the-month) Paint-Out of Plein Eire Dublin at the 12th Lock (on the Royal Canal) at Castleknock, D14. Weather almost held off and it was a fruitful outing. We agreed to make next month's Paint-Out for the first Sat, on 4thDec, to the Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin where there is plenty variety, and shelter too, if required. Hope to see you there. - John O'
  • john o'flynn

    Hi Plein Eire Dublin members!
This Saturday, 4th Dec, we meet in the Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin at 11.30 for our regular first-Sat-of-the-month Paint Out. We'll meet in Courtyard Cafe, which is thru the left doorway after the entrance. Come hail, rain or snow, I'll be there to keep anyone who turns up company. They might let us draw in the glass houses. An opportunity perhaps to do a seasonal painting for the Plein Eire December competition - as I'm sure the snow will still be thick on the ground. Hope to see you there! - Best - JOHN O FLYNN
  • Norah Blount

As it happens I am now free but as it is snowing here in the midlands I doubt very much if the roads will be passable tomorrow - hope you got those photos I sent you John
  • deirdre moriarty

Sorry John, apart from the bad weather, i have a cold. Enjoy!
  • Mary O' Carroll

I am sorry John, I was looking forward to the Botanic Gardens Venue, but I will not be able to make it this Saturday after all.
