Event Description

CLONEGAL - The village of Cluain na nGall, or in English, “the Meadow of the Stranger” is set in a valley between the Blackstairs and Wicklow Mountains, straddling the meeting place of the rivers Slaney and Derry where the counties Carlow, Wicklow and Wexford meet....

Here's a couple of links, for some background info:

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irlcar2/Clonegal_town.htm

10. 30 - Meet in town central ( I believe the town is quite small, so I'm sure we'll find each other!!)

11.00 - Disperse to our favored painting locations

1.30pm - Meet at an agreed location for lunch

2.30 pm - Back to the easel, to either finish a piece or  start another..

5.30pm - We should all be close enough to see how the day is panning..if there's loads to paint, the                  die-hards among us may want to keep      painting..so we'll "go with the flow"......

Here's the link to the photos of the day - March 27th. I think a return trip next week is on the cards....so watch this space!!!

Thanks to Kevin Lewis for the suggestion, Maria Levinge  for all her help during the day, also

Moira McCaffery / Clonegal (Huntington) Castle who had granted us permission  to paint within the Huntington Castle grounds

and of course Mark O Neill, who gave us access to his superb Gallery.

Only just made it - it takes ages to get there on this blooming thing. She does 35 tops and fairly drinks up the juice.

Following up Maria's suggestion, SEPA contacted artist Moira McCaffery or Clonegal (Huntington) Castle who has kindly offered permission for painters on this SEPA visit to paint within the Huntington Castle grounds on Sunday and perhaps may join in.

Well-known watercolourist John Hoar will be giving a 3-day residential course in the castle 17 -19 May 2011.

Clonegal has one of Ireland's six Michelin star restaurants, but Sunday lunch at Sha-Roe is going to set you back aboutt €35 and in my case, I'd have to sleep it off for the rest of the afternoon. Huntington Castle is not officially open until May - but we have free access to grounds (normally €5) kindly from Moira.
For lunch options that leaves the pubs - Osborne's or Johnny Dunne's.
They open 12.30-ish on Sundays, and don't do sandwiches except to special order but will not mind if we bring our own to eat inside with a cup of tea or coffee or a pint purchased at the bar.
Other than that, its a picnic by the river. Either way, bring your own grub.
There is a garage/supermarket which may do take-out coffee and rolls but of that I am not certain.

Moria McCaffery (Durdin-Robertson) is a member of Plein Eire. She lives in Huntingdon Castle, Clonegal. Entrance in the middle of Clonegal.

If you were to approach her she might let everyone in to paint in the Castle grounds. Her son Harry and daughter in law Clare are also artists
