Hopefully, we get weather like this for the Hook Head paint-out during Art in the Open. I'll be available for a couple of hours on Friday morning to advise people on good painting spots. I just rediscovered nearby Slade Harbour recently. It can look great in bright sunlight when there are boats in. And the locals are really friendly and welcoming - I got offered several cups of tea while there!Remember to think of the tide. If it's in, there is a risk that the boat you are painting may leave! So head there at low tide.
Hopefully we get a day like this! The coastline around Carne is flatter and more sandy than down at Hook Head. But this kind of landscape is the perfect location for the main focus of my workshop, which is looking beyond the obvious to find an interesting painting composition. If, like many artists, you find yourself wasting a lot of time driving/walking around looking for the perfect scene, then this workshop will really help you. I believe it's possible to use even the most mundane subject matter to make an interesting painting. What makes the difference is using things like overlapping shapes, contrast and edge variation to give the painting real punch. And of course you can move stuff around too, if that makes a better composition. Anyway, that's what I'll be doing at Carne. As far as I know, there are still a few places left on my workshop and it's now open to anyone, including those who have not registered for Art in the Open. So don't wait too long as I will definitely cap it at 12 participants!
For anyone who'd like to know how to paint like this (surely most of us!) Michael McGuire is giving a 3-hour workshop during Art in the Open. Book your place soon:www.artintheopen.org
Thanks Patrick. It's a magical place!
Magical
Thanks Antti. Taking full advantage of the recent good weather. So far it's the best summer in over five years!
Great paintings Michael!
